Naiyobi Village Water Tank
Naiyobi Village, a pastoralist Maasai community is in a remote area about 4 hours drive by a 4×4 from the beautiful Ngorongoro Crater, a World Heritage Site. Because of the location being part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area there are many restrictions prohibiting any farming only the herding of animals.
With a current population of 15,342, thousands of cows, goats and sheep, the residents in the area have relied on one small water tank that stores clean water. Many village residents are required to hike a steep incline or travel some distances to fill up gerry cans at the one water point near the Primary School, then make the trek back with their donkeys to their Bomas (homes).
The residents of Naiyobi are extremely poor and although receive annual supplementary funding from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority towards education, health and food it is not enough with their water situation being dire especially during the months of May through November.
Due to the remote location and road conditions accessing Naiyobi Village in Ngorongoro, materials and equipment can only be brought in during the months of December through early March or June through late October.
Be The Rain Trust would like to make the commitment to the beneficiaries of Naiyobi with the construction of a 120,000 liter water tank to supplement the current old water tank so that no water is lost during the rains and can be used as a reservoir to hold water that trickles in from the only water line in the region located 15 kilometers from the center of the village.
We estimate the cost of the tank and peripheral costs to be approximately $85,000 USD. It is possible that the Ngorongoro Conservation Authority Area may supplement towards some of the costs.
FUNDS Required: $95,000
- 120,000 liter water tank, transport materials, equipment $85,000
- $10,000 transport to location, accommodation, management and admin related costs over 3 months
