Kituma Primary School Classrooms
Phase 1 (5) Classrooms
Lositete Village, Karatu is located in one of the most beautiful areas of Tanzania with Ngorongoro Crater in the north, Lake Manyara National Park in the east, the Ngorongoro wildlife corridor, upper Kitete and Selela Village of Monduli in the south.
The primarily Maasai population of over 6000 are engaged in cultivation and pastoralism.
The community has only one primary school called Lositete Primary School and as of 2013 the school reported to have 1430 students and 12 teachers.
Lositete Village students cannot get to Lositete Primary School during the heavy rains due to a deep ravine which quickly floods and rises up blocking passage from the area obstructing access to the one school, Dispensary clinic, and local food supply shops.
Be The Rain Trust has visited the remote area finding it to be stunningly picturesque yet witnessed the challenges faced accessing the school (for some students up to a 9 km walk each way) and for several months inaccessible during the rains. AND, something most never experience which is this long distance walk on foot through a wildlife corridor that borders Ngorongoro!
Overcrowded classrooms, difficulty attending due to access, and a dangerous journey just getting to school has left this neglected village with a serious dilemma and a solution to build a school annex in the eastern part of the village.
Thus far this industrious community has collected just over $71,000 from villagers, local sponsors, TASSAF, NCAA, and with little means managed to build:
- 2 classrooms (Kituma Primary School)
- teachers office
- 2 in one teachers’ house
- twelve pit toilets
With the goal to register Kituma Primary School with the government at least another 2 to 5 classrooms are necessary as well as the accommodation for 6 teachers and their families.
Be The Rain Trust has been asked to join the community in constructing the remaining classrooms of Kituma Primary School so that it will qualify as a government school.
PROJECT: Kituma Primary School
GOAL: Be The Rain Trust plans to raise funds for the construction of 5 classrooms of a Primary School, to commence construction early 2018.
BENEFICIARIES: 630 students
COMMITMENT: Lositete Village has already proven to be responsible and dedicated with their current contributions and has agreed to work with and supervise the project as well as to follow up with BTRT.
FUNDS REQUIRED: $59,000.*
The estimate cost of total project will be approximately $140,000. BTRT aims to first achieve the first phase of 5 classrooms through your generous contributions and partnerships with NGO’s, Trusts, and global non profit organizations.
Due to the limited time frame of road access in the dry season, the challenge of travel and transport to bring in equipment and construction materials, setting up accommodation for the construction and supervision team we estimate the breakdown as following:
PHASE 1
- $49,000 for construction of 5 classrooms
- $10,000 towards operating costs over a 3 month period
PHASE 2
- $80,000 for construction of 6 teachers housing and their families
- $10,000 operating costs over a 3 month period.
